Waterproof Picnic Blanket – Also a Beach Blanket
The Scotty picnic blanket has a PU-coated underside with a 5,000 mm hydrostatic head and a soft fleece top – so you stay dry on damp grass and wet sand. It comes in three sizes from M (150 × 120 cm) to XL (240 × 200 cm), with loops on all four corners to peg it down. It works just as well as a beach blanket. Looking for a 200 × 200 cm picnic blanket? The Scotty XL at 240 × 200 cm is just as wide and 40 cm longer. There is no size larger than XL.
Waterproof picnic blanket: what 5,000 mm means
The hydrostatic head tells you how much water pressure a fabric can take before water gets through. The Scotty's underside is PU-coated and rated 5,000 mm. Sit on damp grass or wet sand and the fleece top stays dry from below.
Two things worth knowing: the fleece top itself isn't waterproof – in the rain it gets wet from above. And fleece is soft but it isn't a sleeping mat: against real ground cold the blanket only helps a little. That's what we found in our Sardinia field report, too, after two weeks with the Scotty M.
Beach blanket for sand and wind
At the beach the Scotty works as a beach blanket just as well as on grass. The waterproof underside keeps damp sand out, and any sand caught in the fleece simply shakes out at the end of the day.
In the wind, peg the blanket down through the loops on all four corners with tent pegs or sticks. For longer beach days it pairs well with a beach tent – and with a beach wagon even the XL gets to the water easily.
Seat pads and mats: Josy and Flexy
For a break on a rock, a seat at the stadium or a layer in the tent. Josy and the Flexy models are aluminium-coated and fold or roll up small.
Betty air mattress: for the tent and the guest room
Betty is an air mattress for indoors and outdoors: non-slip underside, carry handles and a Boston valve that fits most pumps. You set the air pressure yourself. Material: TPU.

Is the picnic blanket waterproof? ＋
The underside of the Scotty is PU-coated with a 5,000 mm hydrostatic head. Damp grass and wet sand won't come through from below. The fleece top is not waterproof – in the rain it gets wet from above.
Is there a 200 × 200 cm picnic blanket? ＋
The largest version is the Scotty XL at 240 × 200 cm – as wide as a 200 × 200 blanket and 40 cm longer. There is no Scotty larger than XL.
Can I wash the picnic blanket? ＋
We recommend hand washing or wiping it with a damp cloth. Frequent spinning in a washing machine can wear the coating on the underside. After a beach day, simply shake the sand out.
Does the picnic blanket keep you warm? ＋
Only to a limited extent. The fleece is soft but it isn't a sleeping mat – against real ground cold in spring or autumn the blanket helps little. Its strength is keeping moisture out from below. More in our Sardinia field report.
Picnic blanket or beach blanket – what's the difference? ＋
The terms overlap. A picnic blanket mainly needs a sealed underside for damp grass; a beach blanket should shed sand easily and stay put in the wind. The Scotty covers both: waterproof underside, fleece that shakes out and corner loops for pegging down.
