uquip camping chairs buyer's guide – which folding chair is right for you?

The right camping chair makes all the difference – at breakfast, by the campfire, or at a festival.

No single camping chair fits everyone. If you are heading into the mountains on foot, you need something different than someone driving to the coast in a van – and sitting at an open-air concert requires different features than family camping. This buyer's guide will help you find the perfect match.

The most important question first: How much space and weight capacity do you have available? The answer determines everything else.

30-Second Decision: Which type are you?

Folding chair, shock-cord or classic camp chair – what is what?

πŸŒ‚

Folding Chair (Umbrella Style) – the all-rounder

Collapses from all directions toward the center just like an umbrella – resulting in a slim, elongated package. Fits perfectly into narrow trunk gaps. All uquip comfort chairs function this way: Barry, Barry Air Mesh, Roxy Air Mesh, Cody, Sandy, Rocky 2.0.

⚑

Shock-Cord Chair – smallest pack size

Short aluminum poles connected by an elastic band (shock-cord) – similar to modern tent poles. As soon as you take it out of the bag, the frame almost snaps into place by itself. The result: an extremely compact bundle that fits into any bike pannier. Available from uquip: Infinity and Infinity Lounger.

πŸͺ‘

Fold-Flat Chair – not in the uquip range

Folds completely flat like a board – retaining its full width and height. Better suited for the garden, motorhomes, or caravans with plenty of storage space, rather than on the go. uquip does not carry fold-flat chairs in its range.

The 5 buying criteria that truly matter

What to consider when choosing a camping chair

1

Pack size: How are you getting to your destination?

By car β†’ a folding umbrella chair is perfectly fine. By bike or on foot β†’ shock-cord chairs or stools are best. As a rule of thumb: The chair must fit into the same storage space as the rest of your gear.

2

Load capacity: Plan realistically

Most cheap camping chairs support 80–100 kg. uquip models start at 100 kg (stools) and go all the way up to 200 kg (Barry). If you are close to the weight limit of standard chairs, you will do yourself a huge favor with the Barry.

3

Seat height: Table or no table?

Comfort chairs with a regular seat height pair perfectly with camping tables. Low-rider models like the Sandy are designed for beaches and festivals without a table. Both variants have their place – but they are not interchangeable.

4

Material: Breathable mesh or padded fabric?

Standard fabrics are durable and quick to wipe clean. Air Mesh Comfort+ allows air to circulate – making a massive difference on hot summer days. Available on the Barry Air Mesh, Roxy Air Mesh, and Justy XL Air Mesh.

5

Features: What do you actually use?

Cup holders (Roxy Air Mesh), rocking mechanism (Rocky 2.0), 360Β° swivel function (ThreeSixty Mini), or recline function (Infinity Lounger) – not every feature is useful for everyone, but the right feature can turn your chair into your favorite piece of gear.

Frequently asked questions about camping chairs

What is the best camping chair for bikepacking?
The Infinity is the premium choice at just 1,100 g with a shock-cord frame – its short pole segments fit easily into any saddlebag. For even less weight (but without a backrest), the Trinity M (315 g) is ideal.
Which camping chair is best for heavy people?
The Barry and Barry Air Mesh can hold up to 200 kg – the highest capacity in the entire uquip lineup. Both are folding chairs featuring extra-wide seats and incredibly sturdy frames.
What is the difference between Infinity and Infinity Lounger?
Both are shock-cord chairs built for a minimal pack size. The Infinity (1,100 g, 120 kg capacity) is lighter and more compact – perfect for bikepacking and trekking. The Infinity Lounger (1,490 g, 130 kg capacity) features a taller backrest with a headrest and reclining function – ideal for vanlife and long evenings around the campfire.
Which camping chairs are allowed at music festivals?
Many open-air festivals exclusively permit low-rider chairs with a low seat height – as they don't block the view of people behind you. The Sandy and Sandy XL are specifically tailored for this. Always check the individual festival rules before heading out.
What is the Rocky 2.0 rocking chair best used for?
The Rocky 2.0 is the only foldable camping chair with a genuine rocking function. It's ideal for relaxing evenings by the fire, in the garden, or at the campsite. It is not intended for festivals or gear setups requiring a microscopic pack size.
